ts2596 3a / 150khz buck dc-dc converter 4/9 version: e13 typical application circuit (continue) 2. fixed output voltage version c2 0.1uf d1 b340a l1 47uh 1 2 c3 470uf c1 470uf u1 1 2 3 4 5 vcc sw fb en vss vout=5.0v/3a vin=24v c6 0.1uf l1 recommend value (i out =3a,) v out 2.5v 3.3v 5v 12v v in =12v 33uh 33uh 33~47uh na v in =24v 33uh 33uh 47uh 68uh pin function description vcc this is the positive input supply for the ic switch ing regulator. a suitable input bypass capacitor mu st be presented at this pin to minimize voltage transients and to s upply the switching currents needed by the regulato r. ground circuit ground sw output internal switch. the voltage at this pin switches b etween (+vcc C vsat) and approximately C 0.5v, with a duty cycle of approximately vout / vcc. to minimize coupling t o sensitive circuitry, the pc board copper area con nected to this pin should be minimized. feedback sense the regulated output voltage to complete the feedback loop. enable allows the switching regulator circuit to be shutdo wn using logic level signals thus dropping the tota l input supply current to approximately 100ua. pulling this pin be low a threshold voltage of approximately 1.3v turns the regulator on, and pulling this pin above 1.3v (up to a maximu m of vcc) shuts the regulator down. if this shutdow n feature is not needed, the en pin can be wired to the ground p in. thermal considerations the ts2596 is available in two packages, a to-220-5 l and to-263-5l. the to-220-5l package needs a heat sink under most conditions. the size of the heat sink depends on th e input voltage, the output voltage, the load current and t he ambient temperature. the ts2596 junction tempera ture rises above ambient temperature for a 3a load and differe nt input and output voltages. the data for these c urves was taken with the ts2596 (to-220-5l package) operating as a buck switching regulator in an ambient temper ature of 25 o c (still air). these temperature rise numbers are a ll approximate and there are many factors that can affect these temperatures. higher ambient temperatures req uire more heat sinking. the to-263-5l surface mount package tab is designed to be soldered to the copper on a printed circuit board. the copper and the board are the heat sink for this pac kage and the other heat producing components, such as the catch diode and inductor. the pc board copper area that the package is soldered to should be at least 0.8 in 2 , and ideally should have 2 or more square inches of 2 oz . additional copper area improves the thermal chara cteristics,
ts2596 3a / 150khz buck dc-dc converter 5/9 version: e13 pin function description (continue) thermal considerations but with copper areas greater than approximately 6 in 2 , only small improvements in heat dissipation are r ealized. if further thermal improvements are needed, double sid ed, multilayer pc board with large copper areas and /or airflow are recommended. the ts2596 (to-263-5l package) junction temperature rise above ambient temperature with a 3a load for various input and output voltages. this data was taken with the circuit operating as a buck switching regulato r with all components mounted on a pc board to simulate the ju nction temperature under actual operating condition s. this curve can be used for a quick check for the approxi mate junction temperature for various conditions, b ut be aware that there are many factors that can affect the jun ction temperature. when load currents higher than 3a are used, double sided or multilayer pc boards with large cop per areas and/or airflow might be needed, especiall y for high ambient temperatures and high output voltages. for the best thermal performance, wide copper trace s and generous amounts of printed circuit board cop per should be used in the board layout. (once exception to this is the output (switch) pin, which should n ot have large areas of copper.) large areas of copper provide the best transfer of heat (lower thermal resistance) t o the surrounding air, and moving air lowers the thermal resistance even further.
